MAC By Request Lipstick & Lipglass Swatches & Review - Hoop, Pink Poodle, Glam

Purchased By Me

Return of the 90's in MAC's recently launched By Request 2014 Collection! Was I wearing lipstick in the 90's? Absolutely! While I wasn't allowed out of the house with makeup until high school (which was late 90's for me), I snuck it out in my backpack and purse then removed it before I got home. Naughty? Yes, but who can really blame me? I've been a lifelong lover of makeup and simply couldn't do without it ;) In the words of Will Smith (in the in the late 80's, but it was close enough to the 90's), "Parents Just Don't Understand."

MAC Profile

MAC, my original high-end makeup love that first caught my attention over 14 years ago, produces both pro and general consumer makeup products that range from prep to finish along with quality makeup tools.

MAC recently launched their much anticipated Limited Edition By Request 2014 collection (the lipstick and lipglasses went up online earlier this week), which featured 3 lipsticks, 3 complementary lipglasses and 3 eyeshadows (which launched shortly after the lippies). Featured shades were the top 3 winners in each category (except the lipglasses, which were a surprise release) from a vote MAC held over an extended period during which voters could choose to bring back shades from the 90's for a limited time. The lipstick shades, and their complementary lipglasses, which won the vote were Glam, Hoop and Pink Poodle.

There was a pre-existing Pink Poodle lipglass, but it is not identical to the one released in the By Request 2014 collection and has been distinguished with the label "Pink Poodle by Request".

I have swatched all 3 lipsticks and lipglasses below. I know that at least 1 of the lipstick shades was sold out online earlier when I checked this morning, but the rest were available. This is an online only release, but I wonder if MAC may do a restock or two relatively soon?

Price

MAC lipsticks retail for $16 and MAC lipglasses retail for $15.

Where to Buy

The available shades are currently being featured on the home page of MACCosmetics.com

To better organize things, I'm going to separate these out by shade rather than by product type (which is what I normally do) given that there are 2 products for each shade.

MAC Glam Lipstick & Lipglass Swatches & Review

MAC Glam Lipstick Swatch & Review

  • Finish - matte

MAC Glam Lipglass Swatch & Review

MAC Glam Lipglass over Glam Lipstick

The full effect with Glam lipglass over Glam lipstick is beautiful! It gives lips a glazed cherry look that is to die for.

My Thoughts

Glam is to die for! I'm a sucker for a good red and Glam is a perfect red if you're looking for something vibrant and stunning. I absolutely adore Glam lipstick both on its own and with gloss over it. While I'm not a huge fan of Glam lipglass on its own, I think it's absolutely stunning over a complementary lipstick. If you only buy one lipstick shade, this would be my recommendation!

MAC Hoop Lipstick & Lipglass Swatches & Review

MAC Hoop Lipstick Swatch & Review

  • Finish - Satin
  • Scent - traditional MAC vanilla
  • On the Lips - this was creamy and applied evenly with great coverage to hydrated, exfoliated lips, comfortable to wear

MAC Hoop Lipstick - creamy, medium petal pink (skews a tad salmon-y, but it was a bit less so in person than shown here)

MAC Hoop Lipglass Swatch & Review

  • Finish - typical semi-opaque lipglass formula
  • Scent - traditional MAC vanilla
  • On the Lips - tacky, semi-opaque, some pigment settled into lip lines (more noticeable up close than at arms-length)

MAC Hoop Lipglass - creamy petal pink with slight salmon hue

MAC Hoop Lipglass over Hoop Lipstick

MAC Hoop lipglass had a fairly nice effect over Hoop lipstick from arms-length away, but Hoop lipglass noticeably settled into lip lines over Hoop lipstick up close and wasn't very flattering. The final effect also made the overall lip color look a bit deeper.

My Thoughts

I absolutely love MAC Hoop lipstick. I think it's the perfect spring shade when you want a low-maintenance, fresh lip look. I also think it would make a great first lipstick choice as well as a fantastic spring bridal or bridesmaid color.  I was sad that Hoop lipglass settled so badly into my lip lines. I'm going to try it over a clear lip pencil in hopes of smoothing the surface of my lips prior to wearing it to prevent settling. I wasn't a huge fan of the final effect of Hoop lipglass over Hoop lipstick because of how much it continued to settle into lip lines even over lipstick. I definitely recommend nabbing MAC Hoop lipstick if it goes back in stock.

MAC Pink Poodle Lipstick & By Request Lipglass Version Swatches & Review

MAC Pink Poodle Lipstick Swatch & Review

  • Finish - Glaze
  • Scent - traditional MAC vanilla
  • On the Lips - this had a "thinner", less pigmented formula than the other 2; while I generally only apply lipstick with a lip brush I found this applied best out of the tube so that it melted onto the lips; comfortable to wear

MAC Pink Poodle Lipstick - Fuchsia with slight lavender flash

MAC Pink Poodle By Request Lipglass Swatch & Review

  • Finish - typical semi-opaque lipglass formula
  • Scent - traditional MAC vanilla
  • On the Lips - tacky, some traveling on bare lips with wear (not much over lipstick), stronger lavender flash than lipstick

MAC Pink Poodle By Request Lipglass - semi-opaque fuchsia with lavender flash

MAC Pink Poodle By Request Lipglass over Pink Poodle Lipstick Swatch & Review

Layering Pink Poodle By Request Lipglass over Pink Poodle Lipstick provided a stronger lavender flash on lips, which I thought was lovely. Lips looked vibrant and juicy--very 3 dimensional.

My Thoughts

I absolutely loved the pairing of Pink Poodle By Request lipglass layered over Pink Poodle lipstick! The combo bumped up the depth of color and provided a much stronger lavender flash. Absolutely beautiful! I have heard that people either love or hate Pink Poodle and I'm personally in the love category. If you're not in love with it you can probably find a similar fuchsia lipstick and lipgloss, but if you are taken with this particular combo I say grab them.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I'm very happy with MAC By Request 2014. I'd say my most and least favorites fall as such:
  • Favorite individual item - Glam lipstick
  • Favorite combo - tie between Glam lipstick/lipglass and Pink Poodle lipstick/lipglass
  • Product I could pass up - Hoop lipglass
I personally love the By Request collections. It's so fun to see shades that were popular when I was in junior high and high school come back! If you're wavering on grabbing something I'd say just do it. If you don't like it once you get it you can always gift it. Since these are limited edition and online-only I'd hate to see you wait too long and miss what you want.

BeautyPopStop Tip: If you want all 3 shades, but can't afford to get all 3 lipsticks and lipglasses, just grab the 3 lipsticks and use a clear gloss over them when you want to take them up a notch! Then you'll still have the availability of all 3 shades in your collection and the option to wear them with their natural finishes or glossed.

What do you think of this year's MAC By Request 2014 Collection? Will you be grabbing any of these? Do you remember any of these from the 90's?

Note: Products in this post were purchased by me.

  5. I love these lipsticks and they all look fabulous on you. Mac is killing me with all the collections coming up there is one I don't want something from starting with Playland, Proenza, Aqua, Osbournes and Maleficent. I'm going to be poor but rich with Mac lol! I just wish they would stop messing with launch days. I agree on Glam if you like though grab a back up

    1. Thanks! Yeah, it's kind of nutty how many collections have been launching one after another each year, but I can't complain--MAC has been a long-time favorite of mine and some of the upcoming products are KILLER!
